BLOOMFIELD — A West Hartford man died in a weekend two-car crash, police said.

The crash happened on Route 218, south of its intersection with Maple Avenue, about 6 a.m. Sunday, police said. Hans Schafer, 79, was found slumped over in the front seat of a Honda Accord, which was in the wrong lane, they said. There were no other occupants.

It appears Schafer had been driving south when the Honda went over the center line into the lane for northbound traffic, Capt. Stephen Hajdasz said.

The car then collided with a Ford Explorer carrying Gilles Pipernos, 55, and Benjamin Pipernos, 18, both of whom also are from West Hartford.

Both of the SUV’s occupants had injuries described as superficial.

The crash remains under investigation by a regional traffic squad, North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad.
