Education was one of the major issues touched on by Gov. Dannel Malloy at his annual “State of the State” address Thursday. Malloy proposed investing in a Connecticut’s colleges and universities, as well as boosting early education.

Malloy wants to invest $14 million in state funds to send children to preschool, starting with an additional 1,020 spots next year, and expanding to 4,000 by 2019. He also proposed starting tax-free college savings accounts available to Connecticut children starting at birth or adoption.

“If parents save another $150 in the first four years, we’ll match that for a total state investment of $250,” Malloy said.

Another initiative would invest $134 million into the 17 schools in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system.
