NEWINGTON — Police are investigating a scam during which a caller posing as an FBI agent got a woman to send him $1,225.

The caller said he was investigating an improperly-filed tax return from last year, police said. The investigation was turned over to him by the Internal Revenue Service for prosecution, he claimed.

According to police, the man told the woman she did not complete and return a form the IRS had sent her. He said the IRS was seeking $1,225 to close the investigation, they said, and instructed her to send the payment in the form of a moneygram transaction to avoid prosecution.

Fearful she’d be charged with tax evasion, the woman sent the money, police said.

She became suspicious when the man called back and said he needed an additional $1,400 for legal fees, they said. The woman then called police.

Anyone with any information about the caller is asked to call Newington police at 860-666-8445.
