During tax season, it’s better to receive than to give for sure, but a new scam is making people believe that they owe.

In Newington, police say a con-artist claiming to be an FBI agent duped a woman into wiring more than $1200 for a supposed improperly filed tax return for 2012.

In Branford, a bogus caller posing as in IRS agent convinced a woman that she owed back taxes and threatened arrest if she didn’t wire money immediately.

Certified public accountants say wiring money to the IRS should have raised suspicions, and the phone calls themselves should have been the first red flag.

“What you need to know is that the IRS does not make calls for a simple collection matter where you owe liabilities without having first sent you one or two letters,” Jim Barlow of Barlow Tax Solutions said.

A good rule of thumb to avoid being scammed over taxes is to call the IRS directly to find out if back taxes are truly owed.
