In honor of the 69th anniversary of U.S. Marines landing at Iwo Jima, Gary Roy, president of the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation, and Stanley Dabrowski, a veteran of the battle, visited the FOX CT Morning Extra to talk about a special memorial that was recently built in Newington to commemorate the battle.

Newington’s memorial, which is located on Ella Grasso Boulevard, is the only flag raising memorial built by survivors of the Battle of Iwo Jima. The monument flies a historically-correct 48-star flag, has sand from the beaches of Iwo Jima incorproated into its concrete base and rocks from the site of the flag raising on top of the monument under the soldiers’ feet.

For more information about the memorial or to help contribute to the foundation, visit www.SOSIwoJima.com. For information on an upcoming fundraiser scheduled for Feb. 23, click here.
