Heavy snow caused the collapse of a warehouse roof in West Haven Wednesday night, and Thursday morning,  crews demolished what was left of the building.

Many see this as removing what would be a safety hazard.

One man says while the building has to come down, the memories of an old family business will never go away.

“Back in 1991, my father made a deal with the original owner, and we put our bait shop in there.  We’ve had a bait shop in west haven since the 60’s,” said George Scranton.

“My father was a pretty good fishing-rod builder. And everybody came to see. He had a section set up where everyone could watch him build rods,” Scranton said.

Scranton and his wife watched from across Water street, as crews took down what was left of the building that once housed thier family’s bait shop.

Fire officials were concerned the building could have fallen into the street, so the best option was to tear it down.

While reminiscing, Scranton said the building held a lot of sentimental value.

“It’s part of your past. When you think what emotions there are in your past, sure it’s a little sad. But there isn’t a bad memory here,” said Scranton.

The Scranton’s sold the bait shop in 2000. George and his wife have since moved to Maine, but were in town by chance and were’nt able to leave because of the storm.
