The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority announced on Monday that a new area code is expected to go into effect August 30.
The new area code, 959, will be assigned to the same region as the existing area code, 860. Existing numbers will not change, local calling areas will remain the same and the cost of calls will not change, according to a press release from PURA.
A demand for telephone numbers is the reason for the new area code. Unassigned telephone numbers with an 860 area code are expected to be exhausted by the end of 2014, the release says.
Customers are asked to call their telephone service carriers with questions about the new area code or check PURA’s website for updates: www.ct.gov/pura.
