Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra won first place from the U.S. Conference of Mayors in their annual National Summer Youth Jobs Challenge.

Since he has been in office, Segarra has worked to ensure that the city of Hartford invests in youth employment programming and leverages state and foundation funding that goes toward youth work experiences. Last year Segarra secured $1.25 million that helped put 2,05 youth in the region to work.

In addition he worked with four other mayors to spearhead an unsubsidized youth employment campaign aligned with the Obama administration’s Youth Jobs+ effort. That effort resulted in another 208 employer-paid jobs.

Segarra appeared on the FOX CT Morning Extra with Ruthie Bush Matthews, who oversees the summer youth program at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, and Eugene Morton, a student who took part in the summer youth employment program.
