Windsor High School’s Jack O’Brien stadium and field will be getting a multimillion dollar makeover.

In a rarely used voice vote, a crowd of resident registered voters unanimously approved a $2.3 million renovation project at a town meeting Monday night.

The plan is to replace the grass with synthetic turf, resurface the track, put up a new scoreboard and replace the bleachers, among other improvements.

Supporters say the update will make the field safer, more durable and more enjoyable to use for football, lacrosse, soccer, and other sports.

Ronnie Suggs has coached recreational youth basketball and football in Windsor for years.  He says the turf update is needed because “they can play in any condition. It’s not as giving as grass, but very helpful to play on it in the rain, inclement weather, and it looks nice.  The kids love to play on it. They think they’re superstars.”

Town leaders say they’ll put the project out to bid in April and want the field ready to use by September.
