VERNON — A Manchester man faces attempted assault and other charges after police say he soaked his girlfriend with Amaretto and then tried several times to light her on fire with a cigarette lighter early Friday.

Ramon Gomez, 32, was in custody on $100,000 bail Friday morning and faces charges of attempted first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace. He is to be arraigned Friday in Superior Court in Rockville.

Police said they were called to 144 Terrace Drive at 3:28 a.m. Friday for a domestic disturbance. They learned that Gomez poured the liquor on the woman after a fight and then tried several times, unsuccessfully, to ignite her, Vernon police Lt. Bill Meier said.

Four children were in the apartment and the two, younger than five, were downstairs when the dispute occurred and were splashed with alcohol, Meier said. The children were not injured.

Gomez left the apartment and was captured later at his home by Manchester police.

Police contacted the state Department of Children and Families about the incident.
