PUTNAM — State police are investigating the “sudden death” of a 2-year-old child in Putnam, spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said late Wednesday.
State and local police responded to 129 Mechanic St. shortly after noon for a report of a child in distress, Vance said. The child was taken to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam and pronounced dead shortly after admission, he said.
State police Major Crime Squad detectives went to the Mechanic Street home, where the child lived, to gather evidence and speak to witnesses, Vance said.
The child’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, he said.
The cause of the child’s death is unknown. The state’s medical examiner will conduct a post mortem examination to determine the cause and manner of death, Vance said.
