WEST HARTFORD — A man was killed and a woman was in custody Wednesday night after a shooting on Prospect Avenue near the Hartford line, police said.

Angela Grasso-Cunha, 27, of Hemingway Street in Plainville, was charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm in the death of Jose Mendez, 23, of Jefferson Street in Hartford. She was released on $50,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Hartford Thursday, police said.

According to police, the shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. in the area of Prospect Avenue and Kane Street. When officers arrived, they found a car through a fence and on the Prospect Avenue side of the property at 27 Park Road.

Mendez was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they determined that Grasso-Cunha shot Mendez, which caused the crash.

Grasso-Cunha is a bail bondswoman for Capitol Bail Bonds.

“She’s a great employee,” said a man who answered the company’s phone this morning. He would not identify himself.

Officers closed Prospect Avenue between Park Road and Kane Street and remained on the scene throughout the night. The investigation continued Thursday morning.

Police said they are notifying family members of the shooting.
