West Haven’s City Council on Monday night unanimously approved a proposal to build a playground for Sandy Hook victim Charlotte Bacon.
New Jersey firefighter Bill Lavin, the founder of “Where Angels Play,” outlined the proposal at a council meeting. Charlotte’s playground is one of 26 that are in the process of being built in honor of the Sandy Hook victims.
Charlotte’s playground was originally proposed for a section of West Haven’s Savin Rock Boardwalk, but it met with some opposition from environmentalists. The area is part of 39 acres of shoreline that are protected from development by West Haven’s Land Trust.
Lavin visited a new location further down the shore, and just outside of the protected area. That is where he said a sign showed him that the second location was “the one.”
“This afternoon I went down there and there was one kite flying over the beach. It was pink. It was an angel. I can only imagine that was Charlotte’s message to us that this is where it needs to be built,” Lavin said.
Charlotte’s playground will be decorated in pink, with animals, two of her interests. It is set to open on June 15.
