ANDOVER — A Bolton man was charged with attempted murder on Friday for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend repeatedly when she tried to break up with him, state police said.

John Corver, 51, picked the victim up at Bradley International Airport about 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to state police. She had flown back to Connecticut from a trip to California, state police said.

While driving back to Corver’s home in Bolton, the two allegedly had an argument about the relationship breaking up. When the victim tried to call a friend for help, Corver threw her cell phone out the window, state police said.

The argument escalated and Corver assaulted the victim with a knife, causing serious injuries, state police said. He then allegedly drove to the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry and continued to “stab and slash at the victim with the knife,” according to state police.

Corver then continued to drive and ultimately struck a tree on Skinner Road in Andover. State police responded to the crash at 1:53 a.m. Thursday.

The victim was taken to Hartford Hospital via Life Star helicopter and is in stable condition in the intensive care unit, state police said.

Corver was also taken to Hartford Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and superficial knife wounds to his abdomen, which state police said were self-inflicted. He was released from the hospital Friday and was taken into custody by state police.

In addition to attempted murder, Corver was charged with first-degree assault, criminal mischief, threatening and cruelty to animals. State police said that a pug that the victim was holding in her arms in the car was also wounded in the assault. The dog ran from the car, but was recovered later in Coventry. It has been returned to its owners.

Corver was held with bail set at $2 million. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Rockville on Monday.
