Relay For Life of the Shoreline began Saturday at Walsh Intermediate School in Branford with 59 teams and 572 participants raising money for the American Cancer Society.

At Relay For Life events, communities around the world come out to honor cancer survivors, remember those who died and fight back against the disease.

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around the school track.

The American Cancer Society writes on its website: “Events are up to 24 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.”

In more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries, Relay For Life events are the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
