A Wethersfield man is accused of murdering his mother and living with her decomposing body for months.

John Waszynski, 59, was arraigned Friday on murder and cruelty to persons charges, with bail set at $1 million.

It was Waszynski’s brother, Henry Waszynski, who Wethersfield Police say called them, requesting a well-being check on their mother, Krystyna Waszynski, 86. Henry Waszynski had not seen or spoken to his brother or mother in at least three years. But, when he stopped by their home at 75 Stillman Road on May 14, Henry Waszynski says his brother refused to let him in and acted suspiciously. So, Henry Waszynski called police.

In the arrest warrant application, Henry Waszynski said, based on his brother John’s battle with schizophrenia, he was concerned for his mother, especially because his brother seemed “crazed” that day.

The report said when police arrived at the Stillman Road residence, John Waszynski wouldn’t let them in, saying that his mother was bedridden and too sick to see anybody.

When a police sergeant explained their concern for his mother, John Waszynski said, “I didn’t do it.”

When pressed further by police, as to whether his mother was indeed inside the house, he replied, “yes.” And, in response to asking if his mother was dead, John Waszynski stated, “yes.”

After police discovered the badly decomposing body of Krystina Waszynski in a bedroom, they asked John Waszynski the last time he remembers seeing her alive. He said it was late December.

Asked why he hadn’t reported his mother’s death to police, John Waszynski gave several different answers.

The Office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner determined Krystyna Waszynski was choked to death and had a broken right shoulder. They could not determine the exact date of death.

While not admitting to police that he killed his mother, he did say that, about a month ago, he cut her left ring finger off with a hacksaw and wore her ring around for a while, before discarding it in a brook that borders their property.

John Waszynski’s only prior conviction was a 1998 3rd degree assault charge, stemming from an altercation with his father, Julian Waszynski, who died in 2005. John Waszynski is due back in court June 6.
