MIDDLETOWN — An East Haddam man who on Tuesday said he was on his way to check himself into Middlesex Hospital for alcohol detox got into an accident in the hospital parking lot and was charged with drunken driving, police said.

Kevin Visintainer, 48, of North Moodus Road, told Middletown Officer Matthew Bloom that he did not recall striking a car with his truck, but said he was confronted by someone who said he did hit a parked car.

When Bloom asked Visintainer if he’d had anything to drink, he responded, “I had a few earlier today.”

When he was tested later at police headquarters, his blood alcohol content was .2704 and .2473. A person is considered drunk in Connecticut if their blood alcohol content exceeds .08.

Visintainer was held on $500 bail for court Wednesday in Middletown.
