NEW HARTFORD — The planning and zoning commission voted on Wednesday night to rezone an 18-acre parcel along a wild and scenic stretch of the Farmington River to allow an industrial park.

That action on a proposal by Satan’s Kingdom LLC came after people in Canton, New Hartford and beyond advocated against it. The wooded parcel, located south of the Satan’s Kingdom State Recreation Area, is undeveloped, and people who spoke at a hearing in May said they fear an industrial park will harm the river and be a poor neighbor to adjacent homes.

The industrial park proposal includes land in both New Hartford and Canton, and Wednesday’s vote may set up a similar debate in Canton, where developer Allan Borghesi will need zoning approval as well.\
