In Cromwell, Tuesday was family day at the Travelers Championship and, this year, was a chance for junior golfers to take aim at quite a prize.

At the First Tee of Connecticut  practice area they held the “drive, chip, and putt championship” —  and those shots can pay off.

Winners in each age group go onto the regional competition and, ultimately, earn a shot at the finals held at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia next year.

Kids from all over the area were “driven” for the big opportunity. “Putting is my weakness and my strength is probably driving,” said Alex Maningas, a 12 year old competitor from Ellington, who drove the green about 170 yards.

Joe Mentz, the Connecticut Manager of PGA player Development said, “they drive, they chip and they putt and they receive a point value for each shot.” Mentz added, “its huge, I mean you get a chance to go to Augusta National and take your parents there.”

The competition is free to enter for kids 7 to 13 and there will be another one held at Lyman Orchards golf club on Saturday June 21st. For more information just click www.drivechipandputt.com
