Camp Courant is making a splash again this summer, actually a lot of them.

It is the 120th year for the oldest and largest free day camp in the nation. It has changed the lives of thousands of inner city kids in Hartford. Various donors, corporate and private,  opened their hearts, and the gates opened up on Monday in Farmington where more than 600 kids ages 5 to 12 were truly happy campers. From swinging to swimming there was a lot to celebrate on the vast grounds.

“Our teams really come together,” said Josh Reese, the executive director of Camp Courant. “We have a bunch of kids who are really excited to come here, and you can see it with them coming off the bus that they’re pretty happy about a life-changing experience.”

Senita Young, an 11-year-old camper, said, “I’m looking forward to going in the pool and playing with all my friends.”

The first year of the camp was in 1894.

Monday the camp started with opening remarks from Reese and Hartford Courant Publisher Nancy Meyer, with camp alums and corporate leaders in the audience.  Camp Courant stays open for six weeks.
