There was a big bash at Bistol’s Muzzy Field this weekend as the famed park celebrates 100 years.

“When you talk to people about sports history, Muzzy Field always comes up,” said Edward Swicklas of Bristol’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The field was donated to the city in 1912 by then-Parks Commissioner Adrian Muzzy, and it officially opened in July 1914.

The Bristol Red Sox played all of their home games there from 1973 through 1982. Baseball legend Babe Ruth hit the first home run out of the city’s field. Vince Lombardi played college football there. And Wade Boggs and Fred Lynn took turns at bat on their way up the minor league system.

Right now Muzzy Field is used by an American Legion baseball team, and the three city high schools.

“We grew up here,” said Leslie Masse of Bristol. “I cheer-leaded on the field, played games, came to games. Now we’ve come full circle, back here with the little ones.”

This Fourth of July weekend a carnival, concert and fireworks were part of the park’s centennial celebration.
