UPDATE 2: The U.S. Coast Guard reports that Mattituck Fire Department divers recovered a body from the aircraft. The male pilot was pronounced dead at approximately 12 p.m. by a Suffolk County medical examiner. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation on the crash.

UPDATE: The FAA reports that the aircraft is a single-engine fixed wing Raven, an amateur built plane. The FAA also reports that the U.S. Coast Guard found the aircraft submerged four miles north of Mattituck. The number of people who were onboard is still unknown at this time. The FAA will continue to investigate.

A possible down plane has joined together the New Haven Coast Guard, the Suffolk County Marines and the Riverhead and Southhold Emergency Medical Services in a large search effort.

At approximately 8:50 this morning the command for the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a notification from an aircraft operating in the vicinity that there was a downed plane in the Sound.

The plane was seen eight miles north of Mattituck Inlet, New York, which is directly across the Sound from Guildford, Connecticut. The downed aircraft was described as small and white, and it was reported that a parachute deployed.

The cause of the possible accident is currently under investigation.
