One of the leading causes for emergency room visits and school absences for adolescents his asthma. And a Quinnipiac University physician’s assistant student is hoping to change that trend.

Nicole Cottle, a respiratory therapist by trade, says that an asthma camp for kids, which she volunteered at in her native Utah, left such an impression on her, that she thought kids in Connecticut could benefit in the same way. The closest camp of its kind, according to the American Lung Association, is in Lake George, N.Y.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, Cottle is hosting a free asthma camp for kids, ages 6 through 12, and their parents. It will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Quinnipiac University North Haven campus.

Cottle said the camp will feature instruction such as teaching students about the anatomy of the lungs, their medication, coping mechanisms and what triggers an asthma attack. They’ll also be able to play games, run relay races and make their own mucus.
