More than a dozen tenants are displaced after a major fire broke out Saturday in the Burr Meadow Condos on Misty Meadow Lane in South Windsor.
The fire started at approximately 6 a.m. Tenants described frightening moments: the sound of an explosion, the roof collapsing, flames inside of walls.
Everyone made it out safely and there were no injuries, but there is serious structural damage to the end unit. Affected tenants are getting assistance from the Red Cross.
Barbara Campbell watched as firefighters doused the flames, then made several passes through the charred building and re-emerged with three of her four cats alive. She fought back tears as they were placed in her arms and she told FOX CT the fire happened so fast, she barely made it down the stairs as the top of the building gave out.
The building dates back to the 1990s, and there are no firewalls, according to a fire captain. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
