A Connecticut congresswoman is working to make laws on e-tobacco stricter in an effort to protect children.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., is pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to do more to keep e-tobacco products away from children.

The FDA has proposed legislation that would ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, but the legislation has not passed. DeLauro is calling for the rules to be finalized by April 25, 2015.

Other steps that DeLauro is asking the FDA to take include banning “child-friendly flavorings” of e-tobacco products, such as chocolate or bubble gum. She also thinks “youth-oriented marketing practices,” such as celebrity endorsements, should be banned, and that “containers of highly concentrated nicotine that are inserted into e-tobacco devices” have child-proof packaging.

Lastly, DeLauro is asking for premium cigars to be sold with the same standards as other forms of tobacco.

DeLauro is a member of the House’s subcommittee that funds the FDA.
