Doctors say there are several important numbers we should know to monitor our health.   They’re all somewhat obviously important, but how many of them do you know about yourself?

  1. Blood Pressure – it’s a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
  2. Cholesterol –  especially the ratio between HDL and LDL, which is bad cholesterol.
  3. Your weight
  4. Your waist size
  5. Your blood sugar – this can tell is you are pre-diabetic, or in danger of becoming so.

Connecticut is on pace for a big increase in the number of deaths from opioid overdoses,  according to new data from the state’s Chief Medical Examiner.

The Register Citizen obtained the report, which showed that, through the first six months of the year, 151 people in Connecticut have died of heroin and other opioid overdoses.

That number represents an increase of roughly 60 percent from the total through the first six months of last year.

Due to a sharp increase after June, a total of 257 people died from opioid overdoses last year, so if the numbers from the first half of 2014 carry over to the second half of the year as well, Connecticut will still end up with an increase in the area of 20 percent.

The data also showed that most of the deaths happened in big cities, and that most of the victims were men.

If you light up, then you’re probably paying up for insurance.

According to a new report, smokers pay a whopping 235 percent more for life insurance than non-smokers.

Men are paying more too, an average 38 percent more than women for the same policy.
