Former Hartford Police Detective Tishay Johnson, 40, was sentenced today for stealing $30,000 in firearm permit fees.
Johnson was sentenced to six months of home confinement followed by an additional two and a half years of probation by Deirdre M. Daly, the U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut. He also must complete 300 hours of community service and make full restitution of the money he stole.
Hartford residents must pay a municipal application processing fee of $70 to the city and a background check fee of $66.50 to the state when applying for a firearm permit. Johnson was in charge of the concealed weapons permit program, and one of his responsibilities was processing the applications, collecting the fees and then depositing the fees into the city and state accounts. Johnson altered checks and money orders to make them payable to himself. He also forged signatures on checks to make it seem as if the payees had endorsed the checks over to him.
Johnson stole $29,426.75 between October 2009 and January 2014. He pleaded guilty on May 5 to one count of theft from a local government receiving federal funds.
