UPDATE: The victim, Leroy Brown, remains in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital according to a follow-up from police.
Anthony Anamasi has been charged with assault in the first degree. The statement says that he has a valid gun permit and that the gun he allegedly used was registered in his name.

A New Haven man shot a second man who he claims was trying to attack him with a knife Sunday morning.
Anthony Anamasi, 71, called police at 7:49 a.m. this morning claiming he shot a man and that he was returning to his apartment while he waited for police to arrive.
When police arrived to an apartment building located at 25 Donna Drive they found Leroy Brown, 23, in the front hallway with a gunshot wound to the side of his head. Brown was transported by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital and is in critical condition.
Police took Anamasi into custody, and he is cooperating with investigators.
Both men live in the building where the shooting took place.
