State police say an accidental shooting in Killingly early Tuesday evening resulted in the death of an unnamed 16-year-old male.

Connecticut State Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The shooter, Kyle Carney, 22, told the dispatcher his rifle accidently discharged as he was walking down the hallway of his home, located at 84 Kenneth Drive. Later, Carney admitted to State Police detectives that he was messing around with his gun and had his hand near the trigger and magazine when one round was discharged.

Police have charged Carney, 22, who lives with friends, with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree reckless endangerment. He is being held on $500,000 bond, which was not reduced during his arraignment in Danielson Superior Court Wednesday.

Upon arrival at the residence police found the unresponsive male in upstairs bedroom and transported him to Day-Kimball Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“His [the boy’s] mom was yelling at him [Carney] and was just like how could you do that,” said Alexis Inthaluexay, a neighbor. “He was like I didn't know. It was an accident. And she's like you shouldn't be playing with guns like that.”

Court records indicate that Carney has been arrested twice in the past. In December of 2009 he was pinched for disorderly conduct. In February of 2011, he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, which turned out to be marijuana. Both charges were misdemeanors.
