Today is a big day for local politics, with around 30 primaries taking place across Connecticut.

Most of the races are for local senate and house seats, but the biggest race is the primary to select the Republican nominee to run for governor. Tom Foley and John McKinney are the two Republican gubernatorial candidates.

Four years ago Foley--who was once a U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and is a well-respected businessman--was the Republican nominee for governor, but he lost to Gov. Dan Malloy by fewer than 6,500 votes. It was the closest race in more than 50 years, and he's hoping for a repeat race this year, but with a different result.

"I have some very loyal supporters left over from 2010," Foley told FOX CT.

McKinney, who is currently the minority leader in the Connecticut Senate, thinks his knowledge of the how the state's government works will give him an edge.

"I'm feeling very good about the primary tomorrow," McKinney said. "We've done everything we can in the last seven to 10 days."

Foley is running on the strength of his business experience, and one of his main promises is to cut the state's sales tax by .5 percent.

McKinney's government background is the strength he is running on, and his promise is to eliminate state income tax for those making less than $75,000 per year.

The state is expecting a low turn out since it is a primary, and the middle of summer.

Although McKinney is running as a team with David Walker, the comptroller general of the United States, you have to vote for them separately for governor and lieutenant governor. Walker's opponents are Penny Bacchiochi, a state representative and Heather Bond Somers, the Groton town councilor and former mayor of Groton.
