Thomas Foley has defeated John McKinney in the Republican primary race for governor, according to the AP and Politico. He will face current Gov. Dannel Malloy in a general election in November.
Jenn Bernstein, who is at Foley's campaign headquarters, tweeted that McKinney is conceding the race:
Foley, 62, is best known as a business man and as the former U.S. ambassador to Ireland.
Foley ran for governor in 2010, but he lost by less than 6,500 votes to Gov. Malloy--the closest race the state has seen in more than 50 years.
Shortly after news broke that Foley was the likely winner, Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov Nancy Wyman released a statement saying Foley "would take Connecticut's progress and shift it into reverse. He has spent his career making millions while destroying jobs."
