A three-alarm fire at the old Remington factory in Bridgeport left the building scorched, and two nearby fires did damage as well.

The call for the first fire came in around 11:30 a.m., and approximately 60 firefighters from Bridgeport, Fairfield and Stratford departments responded.

The five-story vacant factory is located near the corner of Barnum Avenue and Helen Street. The factory has had previous fires--including one in 2010 that took more than a week to put out--so firefighters were ordered to fight the fire from the outside since it was deemed unsafe to enter, according to Deputy Chief Robert Petrucelli.

The fire was partially fueled by timber floors that were soaked with oil after years of manufacturing.

A second fire started around the same time a block further down Barnum Avenue in the old factory's former offices.

While firefighters were putting out the fire in the factory they saw flames and smoke emanating from a building across the street, located at 101 Helen St. That fire displaced five families, including José Diaz, his wife and children.

Diaz has a message for whoever's responsible for starting it: "God will judge you, pay for what you did. You didn't hurt me you hurt my children who go to school and don't do anything to anybody."

The three fires are being considered suspicious since they started around the same time and were located just a block apart. They are all still under investigation, and firefighters expect to be at the scene through the night.
