United Parcel Service has announced a computer data breach that affected 51 of its stores in 24 states.

The UPS stores in Manchester and Avon were among those affected. Customers’ credit and debit card numbers were compromised in the breach which started in January and extended into August.

UPS said they received a government bulletin regarding a “broad-based malware intrusion” not detectable by anti-virus programs. The malware affected one percent of their 4,470 franchised center locations throughout the United States.

According to UPS, the store at 35 East Main Street in Avon experienced a “malware intrusion” on March 28. The store at 1131 Tolland Turnpike in Manchester was hit on July 1. The problem was fixed on August 11.

The customer information that may have been exposed includes names, addresses, email addresses, as well as credit and debit card numbers.

UPS is offering identity protection and credit monitoring services to customers who may have been affected.

UPS President Tim Davis apologized in a statement saying, “I understand this type of incident can be disruptive and cause frustration.” Davis said as soon as the company was alerted at the problem it “deployed extensive resources to quickly address and eliminate this issue.”
