The man who allegedly stabbed and killed a baby in Bristol earlier this week was released early from prison.

The Department of Corrections confirms that Arthur Hapgood didn't finish his full sentence for a previous robbery conviction.

Police say Hapgood stabbed and killed Zaniyah Calloway on Monday.

Hapgood left prison 233 days before the end of his sentence because of risk reduction earned credits. This is a program that lets some inmates take classes and undergo counselling in exchange for reduced prison time.

Regardless if he had been released early or not, Hapgood was do to get out of prison in July, before Zaniyah was murdered.

The DOC released a statement on the early release, saying, "Under the law that was in place five years ago, he almost certainly would have been released much earlier, possibly serving as little as 60 percent of his sentence. That is no longer possible."
