Police have identified the victims in Wednesday morning's deadly New Haven crash. The driver of the car, Gwendolyn Buskey, 53, of New Haven was killed in the accident. Her passenger, Vera Mercer, 41, of New Haven was seriously injured and transported to Yale New Haven Hospital.

Police said the car they were driving in was a following a tractor trailer and both slowed because of construction in the area. Another tractor trailer crashed into the car pushing it into the first tractor trailer. Both truck drivers were uninjured.

UPDATE: Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance confirmed there was one fatality in the accident and another person was hospitalized with a serious injury.

Vance said the accident happened around 5:15 a.m. and involved two tractor trailers and one passenger car. Troopers, EMS, and New Haven Fire Service responded to the accident.

Extrication was required and one person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lt. Vance. A second person was extricated and transported to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious injury.

Crews remain on the scene of an accident on the southbound side of I-95 in New Haven.

Fox CT reporter Mike Magnoli observed two tractor-trailers and the remains of a compact car.

It appears the tractor-trailers sandwiched the car and crushed it.

The accident happened just before 5:30 a.m. in an area where construction has been going on for weeks.

At the time of this posting, traffic is being diverted off of I 95 S. at exit 46.

Police are bringing cars off of 95 onto Long Wharf Dr. then immediately back on via a nearby on ramp.

The backups begin long before New Haven.

Traffic on the northbound side is also affected as curious drivers are slowing down in the area around the accident.

No word yet on injuries, though an ambulance is on the scene.
