Design For New Sandy Hook School Unveiled

Newtown Public Schools is training teachers in mental health first aid after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation is partnering with the district to offer teachers Youth Mental Health First Aid training, according to a press release from the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation. YMHFA is a proven, internationally recognized program that helps save lives and erase stigmas that are associated with seeking treatment for mental illnesses. Those who have been trained in the program in the past have felt more comfortable helping others.

“As part of our public input process we heard repeatedly from teachers and school personnel that they wanted to be better equipped to recognize and respond to mental health concerns among their students,” Jennifer Barahona, the executive director of the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, said in a statement.

About 600 staff members finished the first part of the training program before school started this week, and the remaining six hours of training will be completed during a professional development day in November.

“I am pleased and proud of the partnership with the Community Foundation,” stated Dr. Joseph Erardi Jr., the superintendent of Newtown Schools.
