MADISON -- The beaches and camping sites are starting to fill up at Hammonasset State Park for Labor Day weekend. Thousands are expected to flock to the shoreline and other state parks this weekend.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection wants people to be aware, however, that there will be fewer lifeguards on duty this weekend.

"We want to make people aware of that," said Tom Tyler, director of Connecticut State Parks. "All of our state parks will have appropriate signage in place letting them know if there are or aren't lifeguards in places just to make people aware that. We do have those diminished guard crews this weekend."

The weekend is also important for businesses, such as Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale on Boston Post Road. "As soon as labor day comes it's like a light switch," said owner Jim Schreck. "The population is cut down and you really do feel it so these weekends are all big weekends for us and we look forward to them."

If you are headed down to the shore, officials advise you to plan ahead and to arrive early.
