State Police are investigating the untimely death of an experienced driver at Lime Rock Park in Salisbury Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened around 2:30 pm yesterday at the 32nd annual Historic Festival of Racing, according to a Lime Rock Park Spokesperson.

State Police and a park spokesperson said that’s when Lee Duran, 73, of  Lyme lost control of his race car in turn seven, known as the downhill corner, went off the road and crashed.

Police said Duran was taken to Sharon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Lime Rock park said he was one of approximately 25 to 30 other participants in the race. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Lime Rock Park is a natural terrain road course that opened in April 1957 and is notable in the racing industry. This was the first fatality of the Historic Festival of Racing event since it began in 1983.

Police say the incident is still under investigation.
