A vigil has been planned for the West Haven High School student who drowned on Labor Day.

The vigil will be held on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Bradley Point Beach, where Alejandro Zitlalpopoca died just a few yards off shore.

A funeral mass will be held at the St. Louis Church in West Haven on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m., and he will be buried in Mexico, according to Dr. Wendy Charbonneau, the department head of West Haven High School’s world languages and ESL department.

“He really was a great kid and he will be dearly missed,” Charbonneau told FOX CT.

Susan Misur, the communications director of the West Haven Board of Education, said the district is considering establishing a scholarship in the boy’s name.

The district is also helping Alejandro’s family raise money to lay his body to rest in Mexico, and money and gift cards to help care for his 7-month-old daughter. Cards to stores like Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us, Target and Walmart would be most appreciated.

Checks can be made out to West Haven High School with “Zitlalpopoca Family” written on the memo line. All donations can be mailed to:

West Haven High School
