For the first time in its 25-year history, the Family Institute of Connecticut has endorsed a candidate in the gubernatorial race.

The group is supporting Republican candidate Tom Foley in November's election mostly due to his stance against assisted suicide.

Connecticut State Senator Beth Bye said at a press conference that the FIC is out of touch with Connecticut residents, "And clearly so is Tom Foley to seek and accept their endorsement."

Bye also said in a press release that Foley has not been open about where he stands on LGBT and women's rights, and that this endorsement shows "the company he keeps."

Foley responded to Bye's statement saying that his campaign is happy to receive any endorsements from groups that recognize the need for a change in direction in Connecticut.
