The Stamford Police Department has completed their investigation of an accident that occurred on Monday, July 21, 2014 at the intersection of Hoyt St. and Summer St.

A 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, operated by Natalie Gainer, was traveling southbound in the left lane of Summer St. and Hoyt St.  She attempted to complete a left turn onto Hoyt St. and during the execution of the turn, struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The pedestrian was lodged underneath the vehicle and required extraction by Stamford Fire Department Personnel. The pedestrian, identified as Janice Pielert, was transported to Stamford Hospital where she later died.

Natalie Gainer was also transported to the Stamford Hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators completed an arrest warrant for Gainer. On Friday, Sept. 5, Natalie Gainer turned herself into the Stamford Police Department.  She was charged with Negligent Homicide with a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Grant Right of Way to Pedestrians in a Crosswalk, and Obstructed View.  She’s due in court on Sept. 19.

A lawyers for Gainer released a statement Friday morning:

“It’s a devastating tragedy for which Natalie is deeply sorry, as she offers her thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family.  We will take a close look at the forensics over the next few weeks to see whether this was truly an accident or if the conduct justifies this homicide charge.”
