State Sen. Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington) is recovering, but still has not healed after he suffered a serious fall on July 21.
Maynard suffered a fractured scapula–or shoulder blade–and eye socket, as well as several fractured ribs. All the fractures have healed on their own, and he’s expected to make a full physical recovery.
He also incurred a serious trauma to his brain, which has caused him to have trouble regaining speech capabilities. He can understand questions and read, but as for speaking, “he can answer ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to questions, and is undergoing therapy to regain his full speech,” according to Maynard’s sister, Denise Mahoney.
Elections are two months away, and Mahoney says Maynard hopes to heal and be able to fulfill his duties if he is re-elected. The family says they will try to keep the public updated so that voters have as much information as possible to make an informed decision at the polls in November.
