A love of the water and a love of helping children are making a splash on the Long Island Sound. Deb Walters is a grandmother of four, and she is kayaking all the way from Maine to Guatemala for her cause.

Walters, 63, is paddling to raise money and awareness for "Safe Passage," a charity that supports education for poor Guatemalan children.

"I have a passion for the children who live the garbage dumps in Guatemala City so I want to share their story," Walters said during a stop at the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport.

The voyage will take about a year, during which Walters will paddle along the U.S. coastline until she reaches Key West. Walters is an accomplished kayaker who has even been on expeditions in the Arctic.

"One of the things I want to show is an ordinary person like me can do something extraordinary with a little grit and a little perseverance," Walters said.
