The State Department of Health has confirmed two cases of Pertussis, also known as whooping-cough, at Plymouth Center School.
Mark Winzler, Interim Superintendent, said he was in communication with the Department of Public Health and the school medical advisor.
A letter was sent home to parents advising them of proper hygiene to prevent the spread of disease. Parents of students that may have been exposed were getting a separate letter. Staff members who may have been exposed were notified personally.
Pertussis is caused by bacteria that spreads from close person to person. It can cause serious problems in infants, but is often mild in adolescents and adults.
The disease presents itself with a runny nose, sneezing, and coughing. The cough may last for a week or two, and then progressively gets worse. As the coughing increases, the patient may inhale deeply and make a whooping sound.
