As the Ebola outbreak continues to get worse, a local biotech company based in Meriden believes it is close to a vaccine.

Protein Sciences is known for its flu vaccine, Flublok, and it is currently using the same technology to hopefully develop a vaccine for Ebola.

The company's president, Manon Cox, claimed the protein her scientists developed already showed signs that it is working to ward off Ebola. That was the feedback, Cox said, from the National Institutes Of Health.

Protein Sciences expects to have an experimental vaccine ready for testing on monkeys at NIH by the end of the year.

"I want to have a vaccine, and I'm going to be the first one who takes it," Cox said.

Protein Sciences acknowledged development of an Ebola vaccine will likely be too late for the current outbreak, so the hope is to help prevent future outbreaks.
