At the monthly meeting of the Milford Recreation Commission, the process to enact a no smoking policy began.

"I find it to be a little off, it's a little distracting, you know the kids are playing and it's bothering me," said Joseph Bereski, a Milford parent. "You can smell it, and I just don't feel like it's appropriate."

The city of Milford is considering a smoke-free policy at outdoor locations, including city little league fields, playgrounds, beaches, and possibly at city sponsored events. The idea surfaced after the city received many complaints about excessive second hand smoke when children were around.

The state already bans smoking in most restaurants and bars, and several Connecticut municipalities have public smoking bans of their own.

City leaders say the ban is mostly health motivated, but also addresses a secondary problem of litter.

The next time the commission is scheduled to discuss the topic is at it's next monthly meeting in November.
