Police in two eastern Massachusetts towns are searching for a “polite” burglar who apologizes after being caught in the act.

Winchester and Woburn police said while he is polite to residents, he’s still committed felonies.

Police described the suspect as a dark-skinned Hispanic or light-skinned African American male, approximately 6′ tall, in his early 20s with black marks or possible acne scars on his face. They said he was seen wearing a dirty, light-gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Police said the suspect breaks into homes in the early morning hours through windows in the first floor or basement. The homes are sometimes occupied, and he may also have broken into unoccupied homes police believe. Police said the suspect works alone, and when confronted by the people who live in the house, he is said to act very polite and apologetic as he runs away.

Police said they are concerned that he could become aggressive in the future.

“Outward behavior should not lull residents into a false sense of security. This is a dangerous felon who breaks into people’s homes, often while they are asleep inside,” Woburn Police Chief Robert J. Ferullo Jr. said.

Winchester and Woburn are located northwest of Boston.
