A pair of wounded warriors aren't just hitting the road for the Hartford Marathon 5K race, they are taking their message to the streets. Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Malarsie and Navy Lt. Brad Snyder were both blinded in separate attacks while serving in Afghanistan, but both retired soldiers will run for "Team Fidelco" this Saturday.
Snyder and Malarsie, who are both victims of IED explosions, will leave their guide dogs behind--just for a bit--and take the course with sighted guides. The soldiers will run close to their guides, jogging the course connected by a short tether. Malarsie, who ran the half marathon last year, said of the upcoming race, "I'm just so glad and so lucky."
Lt. Snyder, who is a two-time gold medalist in swimming from the 2012 Paralympics, also finished the full Marine Corp Marathon in Washington two years ago. Taking a warm-up jog in Bloomfield with his guide, Snyder said, "I am looking forward to adding Hartford to the list of places I've run."
