NEW YORK (AP) — A 20-year-old man is under arrest in the beating death of a 3-year-old girl whose 5-year-old brother also was assaulted in a Brooklyn apartment. Police say Jeida Torres was unconscious and unresponsive Saturday afternoon in the apartment in the Bushwick neighborhood. A Fire Department spokesman says the girl was rushed to a hospital in cardiac arrest and pronounced dead. Her brother is in stable condition at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. Police say Kelsey Smith was arrested on charges of assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17-years-old. It wasn’t clear if he has a lawyer. Police say Smith has been hospitalized in stable condition. Neighbor Keith Best tells the New York Daily News and New York Post that the boy had big bruises on his face and arms.
