A massive airbag recall, affecting dozens of makes and models, expects to keep service departments at car dealerships across the country busy for a while.
Defective airbags can explode after collisions, potentially sending shards of hardened material into drivers or passengers.
The problem is suspected in at least one death in Florida, where the driver had puncture wounds in her neck after a crash.
Almost eight million cars and trucks, from BMW, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, GM, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Subaru are on the recall list.
Dealerships we reached out to here in Connecticut say they've handled a few of the recalls, but nothing on a big scale yet.
Senator Richard Blumenthal was critical of some places disconnecting airbags until replacements come in.
"Disabling them is potentially as dangerous as having a defective airbag in that car, and so the solution really is to provide loaners at no cost to the consumers so they can protect themselves and their families," Sen. Blumenthal said.
Senator Blumenthal was also critical of the National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration because normally you can plug in your VIN number on its website to find out if you have a recall, but that function wasn't working.
